Fence Terminology

Fences can take many sizes, shapes and designs ranging from heavy, solid boards that provide security to lightweight open-spaced pickets that invite a cool summer breeze.

To keep things simple, we at Colonial Fence offer our board and picket fencing in six major styles:

Most fences are constructed with three basic elements: the post, rail and infill material (namely pickets and boards). Sometimes running boards (fascias, kickboards or section caps) are used within each section.

Posts are vertical uprights. Rails run horizontally between, and are supported by, the posts. Boards or pickets are attached to the front of rails. Fascias and kickboards run parallel to the rails, attached to the front of boards or pickets. Section caps lay flat atop the vertical boards or pickets.

The picture and captions below illustrate many possible varieties of these components.
